Korean Past Tense

September 17, 2011

Here’s a brief post on conjugating verbs to the past tense.

You add either 았/었 by this criteria:

  •  verb stem ends in ㅏ or ㅗ, add 았.
  • Otherwise, add 었.
  • 하다 is an irregular, so it’s conjugated as 했
Examples
  1. 가다 → 갔어요 + 갔습니다
  2. 열다 →열었어요 + 열었습니다
  3. 하다 → 했어요  + 했습니다
