How to use Japanese Emoticons the Right Way

If you’ve been on the internet, I’m sure you have encountered Japanese emoticons or 顔文字 at least once. Well, how have you ever wondered how Japanese people actually use them? Contrary to what you might believe, they generally do not type them out since it would be extremely time consuming. Instead, they register them (aka 顔文字登録)  to their phones. I found this out not too long ago so don’t judge me haha!

There are numerous ways to do this, but it is extremely simple for iPhone users.

  1. Make sure you have enabled the Japanese keyboard

  2. Find a 顔文字 you’d like to save and copy it. Websites like JapaneseEmoticons.net have tons of cute ones.IMG_0101

  3. Next go to Settings > Keyboard > Add shortcut

  4. Paste in your selected 顔文字 and for the shortcut, insert ☻from the 顔文字 presets by clicking on the the ^_^ button on the Japanese keyboard. Trust me on this.IMG_0102

  5. See?! It gets saved in with the other 顔文字IMG_0103

  6. Have fun and go crazy!

PS. Please tell me I am not the only one that didn’t know about this. I used to go and google and copy 顔文字 every time I wanted to use one…. so lame, right?!

If you have any 顔文字 you’d like to share, paste and comment below!
